Kitchener Stitch Tutorial

This video tutorial demonstrates how to join live stitches to create an invisible seam in stockinette stitch using Kitchener stitch. For step-by-step written instructions, see below.

 Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Thread tail through tapestry needle. Hold knitting parallel with the wrong sides together. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl. Pull the yarn through, and leave the stitch on the needle.

2. Insert the tapestry needle into the first on the back needle as if to knit. Pull the yarn through, and leave the stitch on the needle.

3. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit. Pull the yarn through and slip the stitch off the needle. Insert the tapestry needle into the second stitch on the front needle as if to purl. Pull the yarn through, and leave the stitch on the needle.

4. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl. Pull the yarn through and slip the stitch off the needle. Insert the tapestry needle into the next stitch on the back needle as if to knit. Pull the yarn through, and leave the stitch on the needle.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have one stitch left on each needle.

6. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit. Pull the yarn through and slip the stitch off the needle. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl. Pull the yarn through and slip the stitch off the needle.

Weave in ends or tie off as necessary. If your seam is too tight, you can use your tapestry needle to loosen the stitches until the tension matches that of the knitting.
