Meet your new favorite all-natural sock yarn: Highland Sock Sets are durable, high-twist, no nylon, and non-superwash! This one-of-a-kind naturally dyed wool yarn is made by hand in small batches. Each color is unique and non-repeatable. Due to the nature of natural kettle-dyed yarns, there are slight variations in color in each skein, creating a tonal effect.

Why use non-superwash and no-nylon yarn for socks?

The superwash treatment often means coating the yarn in a thin layer of plastic to prevent the natural scales of the wool fiber from felting together in the wash. However, this also negates many of the natural beneficial properties of wool: superwash wool don't have the natural elasticity, durability, or memory that non-superwash wool. Nylon is often added to superwash merino (a fine wool not suited to hard wear) to give it back some of the strength lost from superwashing, but without the superwash treatment, more sturdy wools like highland wool or BFL don't need nylon as they are strong and durable on their own. These all-natural sock yarns will felt a little bit at the heel, toes, and balls of the feet, which increases their durability even more. Which means fewer holes and less mending for you! Just knit your socks slightly longer in the foot (by 1-2cm) to account for the shrinkage from felting.

Each skein is hand-dyed in small batches, and there might be slight variations from the photos. I do my best to ensure the photos are accurate and that each skein is as consistent as is possible with natural kettle dyeing techniques. Each skein is unique and one-of-a-kind, which is part of their charm!

Natural dye note: Due to the nature of some natural dyes (especially logwood), some color may transfer to your hands when knitting/crocheting. This is normal, and the color will wash off your skin easily with soap and warm water. If you are doing colorwork, wash the yarn before use until water runs clear.

Note: Colors may appear different in person than in listing photos due to different monitor settings.
